First let me walk through how I got job then I'll discuss in common. In 2009 though I had campus offer in my hand but due to recession they postponed the joining date and that to it was not sure. All my dreams of becoming so called 'Software Engineer' had gone. I did not have any options I had to work for my daily bread and butter. I was fed up asking money from parents.
The best thing I did was I requested my seniors to accommodate me in their house. That helped me to not to worry about staying, Internet, Books and laptop. Then I started sending my resumes to all my seniors, friends, job portals and to my juniors!
Initially 15 days I prepared well and started applying and attending the interviews, since IT market was down, there were tougher days. And I was writing for all exams including Govt jobs, Bank jobs and other non technical jobs. Then I decided to join a NGO for 3 months, There I was getting 4k per month. In the middle I use to come Bangalore and attend interviews. Those are the only 3 months in NGO I felt highly satisfying in my life, I felt at least I did something good for society in my life. And during those days I had built strong contacts across all fields. And later that payed me well. In the middle I had given an Interview and got selected and then my career started.
To keep this discussion short let me directly come to the points to increase the chance of getting Jobs for freshers.
1) Give minimal time initially ( a week or two ) and brush up all or required academic knowledge.
2) Come up with self explanatory and attractive resume and upload in all Job sites.
And make sure you update your resume regularly ( say once in a week ) in Job sites, else your resume will be in the bottom of the stack.
3) Forward the resume to all your seniors, friends and all other company career emails address. And make sure to remind them regularly ( Generally people do forget to upload in their respective companies, hence it's our duty to remind them )
4) During Interview days, make sure to brush up, prepare well and attend. And After that make sure to get feedback on the same. So that you can improve in next.
5) During other days, solve MCQs, puzzles and keep preparing. Keep updated with latest technologies. And in the middle try to write small application, so that you can add in your resume.
6) Be in touch with your good seniors who can give good feedback and If possible try to get on which technology they are working and be updated with the same.
7) Browse all the companies you want to attend and send them resume. ( email ID will be given at career's option )
8) If you have not got job in one month, at least in that time you should add 2 new projects and 2 new technologies in your resume.
Nothing wrong in working for startup till you get your desired Job ( It's highly subjective ).
All the very best :)
